Equipment and plant rental firm Speedy has launched a site-level consultancy service, with Renault-Nissan Consulting, that promises tenfold improvement.

Speedy launches advisory service with Renault Nissan ConsultingDubbed Lean Site, the new advisory service is part of Speedy's One Plan sustainability approach, in this case aimed at providing practical advice to contractors on how to streamline onsite processes to improve efficiency and save money.

Speedy explains that the concept has its roots in the automotive industry, and is an extension of lean thinking – which is relatively new to construction sites.

Proof of its effectiveness comes from a Lean-site audit conducted at Speedy's own multi service centre in Warrington. Speedy and RNC reorganised workshops and internal processes, says a spokesperson, resulting in a 58% increase in engineer productivity and improvements to maintenance procedures.

Those, in turn, he says, greatly reduced capital expenditure on equipment and enhanced site profitability.

In fact, he reckons that on average, customers can see a tenfold return on investment, with significant annual cost savings being driven from the adoption of Lean Site processes.

"Each year, construction and demolition waste contributes up to 40% of the solid waste produced in the UK," comments Lee Woodward, managing director Training and Advisory Services for Speedy.

"In addition, wasted manpower contributes a significant amount to job costs. Lean Site helps to remove unnecessary materials and manpower waste by losing the fat from how things are done – thereby reducing environmental impact and the cost of delivering the job."
