Self discharging bulk carrier operators implement wear protection

Operators of self discharging bulk carriers and vessels that fit wear protection systems are likely to get their money back five times over, during the lifecycle of the vehicles.

Self discharging bulk carrier operators implement wear protectionThat's the message from specialist wear protection firm Kingfisher Industrial, which points to the seriously detrimental effects to bulk carriers of bulk cargoes that can be very dense, corrosive and abrasive.

Kingfisher managing director John Connolly says that not only do the company's calculations show the five times life improvement factor for operators' equipment, but also that many provide wear life of up to 20-years.

"The choice of liners to aid discharge and protect structures is an important decision," states Connolly.

"Not only will it maintain the asset value of the vessel handling equipment; it will also ensure demurrage costs are kept to a minimum by enabling continuous discharge at the desired rate of conveyance," he explains.

And he adds that installing an optimised lining system reduces the risk of spillages and any environmental impact and clean up costs.

"It also eliminates the thankless task of equipment repair, and takes away the requirement for crew to enter dangerous and, in some instances, confined spaces, to undertake cleaning and clearing of material blockages," states Connolly.
