ABB WaterMaster to help RWE remain MCERTS compliant

Energy company RWE npower says it is will shortly be verifying its MCERTS (the Environment Agency's certification scheme) commitment, with the help of a new ABB WaterMaster electromagnetic flowmeter.

ABB WaterMaster to help RWE remain MCERTS compliantThe firm's 1,400MW Didcot power station has always monitored cooling water discharges, but, according to Peter Harrison, senior C&I engineer, this extra tier of instrumentation enable it to verify that readings provided by existing meters are accurate.

"We've already got three meters on our cooling water purge system, but we'd like to be able to verify their performance," expains Harrison.

"We're now installing an MCERTified WaterMaster electromagnetic meter at a point where all three flows come together. This means we can verify the readings, in addition to verifying the WaterMaster itself in situ, using its onboard verification system."

Launched in 2008, the WaterMaster was one of the first flowmeters to be awarded a Class 1 MCERTS conformity certificate for closed pipe flow measurement.

Civil works are about to begin on the installation and the new, two-tier system should be up and running later this year.

RWE npower is also upgrading its data logging, with the addition of an ABB ScreenMaster videographic recorder.

Industrial sites need to meet MCERTS requirements whenever discharges must be monitored and controlled as part of their permits under the Environmental Permitting Regulations (EPR).
