A battery-operated submersible device for automatic meter reading is now available from MAC Solutions, which has taken on the Aqlog instrumentation range.
 The device, manufactured by Taiwanese firm Aquas Smart Water Solutions, simply clips on to an existing water meter, which requires no modifications or re-engineering.
It works using image processing and optical character recognition technology and provides a compact, wireless (GPRS or 3G) solution.
The device also has built-in data logging and alarm management, so water companies can offer online access to water bills and water usage profile. MAC Solutions reckons water bill accuracy should be up to 10% better.
This device is dustproof to IP68 and can operate in temperatures from –20 C to 75 C and in extreme humidity environments. It also has an integral Modbus interface for data transmission and can store up to 50,000 records over five years,
