When it comes to high performance couplings, manufacturer repair is best, according to Bibby Transmissions, which reminds plant engineers of the importance of security.
 "Our couplings are the most reliable of their type," insists comments Steve Broomhead, business unit manager for Bibby's Turboflex Division, "but there are still occasions when they need repairing and, as the original manufacturer, we think that the interests of our customers are best served by our undertaking any repairs."
Broomhead reminds plant engineers of the importance of operating environments. "Many couplings, especially disc types, are used in critical applications – power generation, marine, oil and gas, petro-chemical and military – where adherence to industry standards is mandatory," he explains.
"When we repair one of these couplings, the customer receives a warranted unit and the security of knowing that it conforms entirely to the original OEM standard, including dynamic balancing and testing," he adds.
Broomhead warns not only that that warranties will be void if Bibby doesn't undertake the repair, but also that non-standard parts and materials might be used, because third-party repairers do not have access to the original designs and specifications.
"Consequently, they have to resort to reverse engineering, which is never ideal – and certainly not acceptable where the coupling is used in critical applications," he explains.
