By replacing standard induction motors on its ring spinning machines with permanent WMagnet motors from Weg, Buettner, a textile manufacturer, has reduced its power consumption by 33% and increased machine utilisation by 80%.
 Brazil-based Buettner, which produces more than two million bath towels every month, says that it first bought three of the motors from Weg to assess their performance.
Buettner electrical maintenance supervisor Aires Fontoni says that following the motors' success, they are now set to become standard fitment on all its 45 ring spinning machines, which transformed raw cotton into spooled thread.
"Our goal is to replace all of our standard induction machines with Weg WMagnet motors within three years," he says.
Previously, the machines operated with standard induction motors at two speeds; making it was necessary to stop each machine for each gear change.
With control now via frequency inverters that vary machine speed from zero rpm to 1,800 rpm, "our personnel no longer need to stop the machine to change gears and we also benefit from the soft start".
Fontoni also praises the new motors' lower maintenance costs ["practically zero"], as well as the variation of motor speed with constant torque which results in energy savings and increases both the reliability and the performance of the production line.
